What happens during a newborn photoshoot?
Newborn & baby photography
Welcoming a new baby is magical and overwhelming!
If you’re thinking about newborn photos but aren’t sure what actually happens during a session, you’re not alone. This post is here to walk you through it step by step, so you know exactly what to expect.
Before the shoot
Once your session is booked, I’ll send over a short prep guide with everything you need to know from what to wear, to how to prepare the room. Don’t worry, there’s nothing complicated. The aim is simply to make sure your baby is comfortable and everything goes as smoothly as possible.
When I arrive
The first few minutes are relaxed. I’ll say hello, have a quick look around for the best light, and give your baby time to settle. Your baby leads the pace, and there’s plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, or nappy changes along the way.
The session itself
I keep things calm and gentle. Some babies sleep through the whole shoot. Others are wide awake and curious. Either way is fine. We’ll follow your baby’s lead. You don’t need to worry about posing your baby. I’ll guide you and gently position them to get natural, beautiful shots, whether that’s in your arms, on a bed, or snuggled in a wrap.
We’ll get a mix of images:
• Close-ups of tiny hands, feet, and eyelashes
• Natural shots of your baby just being themselves
• Photos with you and your partner, and siblings if you have other little ones
• Any special items you’d like to include (a blanket from grandma? A favourite teddy?)
What if…?
Babies cry. They need feeds. They need breaks. And that’s absolutely fine. I allow plenty of time (usually up to 2 hours) so you never feel rushed. My job is to work with whatever the day brings. The goal is to capture the real, beautiful, fleeting moments of these early days.
After the shoot
I’ll carefully go through all the images, choose the best ones, and edit them in my natural, timeless style. A few weeks later, you’ll receive your gallery to view online and choose what you’d like to keep.
A newborn session isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection.
