Orthodox Baptism, Bristol
I had the privilege of photographing a beautiful Orthodox baptism in Frenchay, Bristol.
Orthodox baptisms are full of symbolism and tradition. They’re not just about welcoming a child into the faith, they’re also a celebration of family, heritage, and the deep-rooted customs that have been passed down through generations.
There are so many meaningful moments throughout the ceremony. From the anointing with holy oils to the triple immersion in blessed water. The oils represent the child’s dedication to God, while the water symbolises a fresh start, the washing away of sin and the beginning of their spiritual journey.
On the day itself, the church was glowing with candlelight with lots of incense in the air and golden details everywhere you looked. (I later found out the candles symbolise the light of Christ, guiding the child through life, and the incense represents prayers rising to heaven) The godparents have a huge role to play. Honestly, it felt like they were busier than the parents! They commit to supporting and guiding the child in their faith, which is a beautiful responsibility.
As a photographer, it’s a real privilege to capture moments like these. There’s something incredibly special about seeing faith, tradition, and family all come together in one day. From the quiet prayers to the joyful hugs afterwards, every part of it tells a story.
