How to prepare kids for a photoshoot: tips for a relaxed & fun family session
Family photoshoots are all about capturing your little ones personality, energy, and charm. But as a parent, you might be wondering how to help them feel comfortable and happy on the day. After all, kids can sometimes be shy, restless, or a little unpredictable and that’s completely normal!
Over the years I’ve photographed many families across Bristol, and here are my best tips for preparing your kids (and yourself) for a relaxed, enjoyable session.
1. Keep it light & positive
Talk to your children about the photoshoot beforehand, but keep it low-pressure. Let them know it’s just about having fun together, not about sitting still or being perfect.
2. Dress them comfortably
Choose clothes they feel good in (nothing too scratchy or tight) and avoid last minute wardrobe battles.
3. Bring a favourite toy or comfort item
If your child has a favourite soft toy or comforter, bring it along. It can help them feel more secure and even make a sweet addition to your photos.
4. Plan around nap & meal times
Try to book your session for a time of day when your child is usually well-rested and fed. A tired or hungry child is less likely to enjoy the experience.
5. Don’t worry about perfection
Some of the most beautiful moments happen in between the “poses” - giggles, hugs, silly faces. Let your kids be themselves and trust me to capture those little moments that really matter.
6. Bring snacks & water
A quick snack break can make all the difference if little ones get a bit grumpy or need a boost.
7. Relax and enjoy yourself
Kids pick up on your mood, so the more relaxed and happy you are, the more they’ll enjoy it too!
