A WINTER FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT with GRANDPARENTS
Just before Christmas, I met a lovely family who were visiting from Singapore to spend their holiday with parents/grandparents near Bath.
There’s something especially meaningful about photographing families when everyone is together, particularly when it doesn’t happen very often. These weren’t just updated family photos. They were memories of a season where three generations were under one roof.
The session took place at the grandparents’ home near Bath — a beautiful house with generous grounds and plenty of space for little legs to run.
Starting Indoors
It was properly cold outside (the kind of December chill that makes you grateful for central heating), so we began indoors.
The youngest member of the family was still a baby, so we kept things gentle and calm. I always allow sessions to unfold naturally, especially when there are young children involved. There’s no rush. No pressure to “perform”. Just space to be together.
Wrapping Up for the Garden
Once everyone was layered up in coats and scarves, we headed outside.
The grounds were stunning even in winter. One of my favourite moments of the session was the older granddaughter on the tree swing. There’s something timeless about children on swings — the movement, the laughter, the slightly windswept hair. Those images always feel full of life. While she played, the adults gathered nearby, chatting and watching.
Winter Family Photography
Winter sessions have a quiet kind of beauty. Soft natural light indoors. Muted outdoor tones. Cosy layers. Close cuddles.
You don’t need summer sunshine for beautiful family photographs — just connection.
If you're planning a visit home, celebrating Christmas, or simply gathering the family in one place, it can be the perfect time to document it.
